Yep, the yellow MGA is for sale. After 18 years of competing with RMVR, I’m moving on to other interests.
Most of you know it’s pretty darn fast and reliable.
Here’s what you’re getting-
Drive train-
5 main 18V block +.030, decked. MaxSpeeding Rods, JE Pistons, crank ground 10/10. Head was developed with oversized valves, ported and flow bench tested, HD springs, fancy pushrods and cam followers. 11.5:1 compression (runs great on 110). Transmission is a modified 3 synchro close ratio helical set up with large dia. input and layshaft. C/R gear set was sourced as NOS original BMC production from another vintage racer who had it in a box in his shop for decades. Flywheel is Fidanza aluminum, clutch is MGB heavy duty from Borg and Beck. Quaife LSD in a banjo housing with 4/3 gear set. Wheels are mid 80’s-90’s SAAB 900 steelies 15x5.5.
Ignition is provided by a Mini Cooper S Lucas D-something non vacuum advance distributor rebuilt and tuned by Jeff Schlemmer with uprated points. Plugs are NGK, wires are silicon from Moss Motors. Coil is Bosch Blue. Battery is light weight lithium ion currently running in a loss configuration, but a alternator can easily be installed (already has wiring and mounts).
Fuel system consists of a 8 gal Fuel Safe installed low through the boot floor. Pump is a Holley Red, solid lines run to a gauged pressure regulator then on to twin HS6 1 ¾” SUs with modified needles. Intake manifold was port matched to head and carbs.
Exhaust uses a stainless long branch 3-2-1 header with 2” tail pipe and small glasspack type muffler.
Cooling is provided by a modified Afco aluminum scirocco style bi-pass radiator with a pressurized expansion tank located on the firewall shelf, all backed up by a electric manually switched fan and a 160deg thermostat.
Initial suspension set up was modified with Dave Headley’s guidance- MGB kingpin and spindle front end, front and rear spring and damping rates, front sway bar, and so on… I’ve tried a few other spring rates, but it really hasn’t been modified since his initial recommendation because it works so well (Thanks Dave, miss you!).
Brakes are MGB fronts with Hawk Blue MGB GT V8 pads, rears are stock shoes and drums.
Brake and clutch master is a dual circuit Willwood hanging pedal arrangement with brake bias adjustment. They work very well but can use new pads and rotors up front, cheap and easy.
Currently sits on 3 yr old, mostly spent Kumho’s.
Roll bar is CRMO. It is huge even for me and I’m 6’4"! Seat is standard Kirkey bolted to the floor. 5 pt belts are expired. Single hand-held fire extinguisher. Removable steering wheel.
Body has some dings, small dents, road rash. I never had a metal-to-metal incident with the car (That’s Right!).
Performance- Easy to drive. Very neutral and predictable handling. Easy turn in and on throttle exits, trail braking, etc. Know anyone in RMVR who’s been racing for at least 5 yrs? Ask them how well it goes.
Best I could do with it was 2:13’s at HPR and 1:54’s at Pueblo. I’m sure you can make it go faster!
Be sure to check out this competitor POV footage of the car at High Plains Raceway from a few years ago. Thx Jim.
